If you are a homeowner, you know that there are many things to keep track of so that your home stays up-to-date. One huge responsibility is making sure that your roof stays updated. Whether you’re a first-time home owner, or you’ve owned a house for years but have never had to replace your roof, we’re here with a cheat sheet that will help you determine if it’s time for a new roof.

  1. Age: Knowing the age of your roof is a must when you own a home. Most roofs have a 20-year warranty. If you know that your roof has not been replaced for at least 20 years, it is very possible that you need a new roof put on your home.
  2. Damage: If the roof on your house has been updated in the last 20 years, there are other ways to tell if it might be time to replace it. If you are having trouble with leaks due to water, that could be a sign that you need a new roof. Aside from letting water into your attic, roofs can also leak light. If you are in your attic without the lights on and notice some light coming through small cracks, that is a sign that there are leaks in your roof and it needs to be fixed. Lastly, if your roof is not doing its job of insulating your home, you may notice an increase in your energy bills because your air conditioner and heater are having to work harder to keep your home at your preferred temperature. If you notice any of these issues in your home, it may be time to have your roof looked at.
  3. Looks: Lastly, if your roof is under 20 years old, and you haven’t noticed any damage or rise in energy bills, there are still a couple more signs to look for to help you identify the need for a new roof. Many of us pull in and out of our driveways without taking the time to notice details of our home. One tip is to go outside and take some time to look at your roof and the beams around it. If you notice that your shingles look discolored or are curled or bent, that is a sign that they need to be replaced. You can also take a look at the exterior of your home around the roof-line. Look for staining, peeling, or bubbling of paint as signs that your roof is in need of updates.

If you have noticed any of these happening around your home, it may be time to contact a roofing company to take a further look at your roof and determine if you can get by with small updates, or if you need a full roof replacement.
